Sydney Hip Hop Events JULY 2014

So it's well and truly winter now in the land down under, and for a lot of people that means staying at home, huddled over a heater watching TV series that they have illegally downloaded from the US... well that can be fun, but you know what it means for me?? Hoodies! And jackets!! I didn't have the luxury of these awesome and comfortable types of accessories living in far north QLD for three years before moving to Sydney, so now I really appreciate them.  And of course coming from Upstate NY I know that this isn't a REAL winter anyway, so buck up Sydney.  We have a nearly perfect climate here and we never get that bitter cold like in Canberra or Melbourne.  So go nuts and get amoungst it! Don't forget if you have any events that you want to me to add you can contact me on my page and let me know!

Tuesday 1st

School of Rap
Big Village is for the kids. Or at least they are in this specific case. Over the school holidays the crew have put together a work shop for school age children 9-16 that would like to learn how to rap.  Freestyle kings Rapaport and P Smurf will teach the basics of hip hop culture including how to use it for positive expression through rhyming games and other activities.  The group will then write and record a song which will be uploaded to Youtube and distributed through social media to give some insight on the recording process as well.  It will be a fun outing for young family members or friends as an introduction to the hip hop community.
The Work-Shop, Redfern
10am- 4pm
Tickets $60 (or potentially cheaper if you message Joel)

Thursday 3rd

P Smurf
Two of Sydney's best freestyle rappers together on one night! He's the big blue papa from Big Village, you may have seen him showing off his skills on one of his many projects- Sketch the Rhyme, Daily Meds, and Reverse Polarities.  This will be a night you can catch him doing all his own thing.  Also on the solo tip you can catch EaRelevant of Broken Thought Theory and Beat Thieves.  He's a king of the frees as well and an all around awesome dude so the night is sure to have a lot of spontaneity.  He'll have the highly skilled DJ Prolifik  on the decks.  As if that's not enough reason to go you can also check out "The World's Worst Rapper," Subsketch, killing shit and staying humble.
Forresters Hotel, Surry Hills

Mind Over Matter
This is a free gig as a thank you to all the fans and in celebration of the release of their 3rd studio album "This Way to Elsewhere."  The winners of the comp Sleepwalkers and Creepah will be on support.  And who knows, there may even be some high profile guests.  This track with Bliss n Eso has been doing quite well, just sayin!

Friday 4th

Killa Combo
I am totally sold on this new concept thought up and presented by Big Village.  It is completely aimed at collaboration amoung artists and puts together crews that may not normally get a chance to work together.  I was even inspired to write a review of the last one that featured Jeswon and Chasm, you can read that here.  This time we will see one of Sydney's most well loved and respected local artist, Dialectrix combine with relatively unknown but futuristic funky producer PaperToy.  It will be a one off performance that will never again be recreated in which they will combine their catalogues and styles into a unique blend of songs, frees, and anything else unexpected.
Also on the night will be a performance by Loose Change as part of the tour celebrating the release of their new single "Yes Or No," check it out here.

So BY DEFAULT this makes this the most awesome SYD DEF JAM ever!  It's all right, it doesn't ALL have to be about me, I mean there are plenty of other reasons to go.  If you love hip hop then this is the longest running true hip hop event in Sydney and it encompasses all the elements.  So come for the love of music and art and dance and rhyming, it's guaranteed to be a day filled with beautiful vibes.  The only reason not to come is if you have a bad attitude. Come to learn and build and grow with all the real heads.  This is a family friendly event.  Check more about the history here.

Peanut Butter Wolf
If you're wondering about the name, it comes from the mouth of a child.  He adopted it when he heard that his girlfriend's little brother had a great fear of the "the peanut butter world monster."  He is a world renowned DJ and founder of the independent music label Stones Throw Records which has worked with a diverse group of underground hip hop artists.  Playing a handful of club dates ahead of his Splendour in the Grass apperance, you can welcome him to Australia by bringing your dancing shoes out with you on this Thursday night.  Get down to a mindblowing set of hip hop and funk music;  the best way to kick start your weekend!

One of the hardest working DJs in Sydney, possibly the best but certainly the tallest.  Raine not only puts together incredible DJ sets as a co-host of the Hardcore Classic radio show on 2ser Friday nights but he is also a working DJ, producer, promoter at his company Homey Don't Play Dat.  That AND he is one half of the audio visual outfit NTSC which opens for such international acts as... oh I dunno Jurassic 5!
For this session at the beautiful underground speak-easy pub he will be playing some break beats, boogaloo, and bass. For all the B-Boys and B-Girls
Play Bar, Surry Hills

Cypher
Hip Hop in the northern beaches!  This is a monthly night and as the name suggests these guys like to cypher, so yes the night will include a big one.  The night will be headlined by 2Face and Jason Matts.  It will also include a performance by Broken Thought Theory, this will be their last show for quite a while so they can take time to finish off their album so see them while you can, or suffer the hell of waiting and anticipation.  Also the young emcee from the area, Baskiat, will be officially launching his debut album 'Sophisticated Fiending' on the night and everyone will get a copy.

SYD DEF JAM
Let's go on a field trip.... in doors! SYD DEF JAM has been held in a wide variety of locals all around Sydney since it's inception in 1984.  But almost always has it been an outdoor event which is open to any and everyone.  This time Def Jam will bring the spirit of the event to a beautiful little bar that I seem to write about all too often.  I'm sure that the flavour and the essence will be kept in tact at this venue.  Just remember, it's all about the DJ!

@peace and the Plutonian Noise Symphony
These guys are friggen hilarious and I literally cannot think of a way to better describe them than what they say about themselves. I'm going to leave you with their words...
"@peace are a 5 piece group from New Zealand, a sinking island in the Pacific Ocean somewhere. Consisting of three producers and two lyricists, their sound is something like if Bjork and Sun Ra made a rap album. Something like Nietzsche transcribed into Ableton. This year they are set to release their first album (that they actually like). The album is about things like singularity, time dilation, death and other fashionable things that speak to the voice of today's generation."
See you there!!

Empire Rising
The power of rock, the craftiness of hip hop, with a finger on electro and funk.  This mash up fusion act will certainly fill your hip hop quota with their intelligent raps and will also get you rocking out to their full live band.  It certainly must be seen to be believed. Joining them will be new to the scene soul singer Kuseah who I haven't seen yet but her style has been compared to Amy Winehouse.  Her influences stretch from hip hop to reggae, to 90s boy bands. Also thrown into this interesting mix is the multinational talents of Broken Thought Theory, and the steady boom bap of High Noon. Should be a very interesting night to say the least.
Coogie Bay Hotel, Coogie

Saturday 26th

The Chop
This is a monthly to bi-monthly night celebrating what is the little known Sydney beat making scene.  This isn't a beat battle, but rather a showcase of local talent this month's live performances Jae Moon and Ink Stains. Holding it down on the ones and two will be DJs Raine Supreme and Benny Hinn. They've got the perfect venue for a night like this.  It's intimate but with plenty of room to dance, a great sound set up, and a creative, inspiring atmosphere. If you haven't been before, I promise this will be your new local bar.

Daily Meds (video shoot)
Looks like Daily Meds is about to make their most hectic video yet. They've got a professional crew working with them create a riot scene, something more than relevant in this world.  They need both rioters and police to act out the scene. No one wants to be the po po of course but if you're a big bloke and you've got some black boots please bring them in, it would seriously help them out.  They've got some killer cop uniforms to go with. On the rioter side: balaclavas, scarves or other face covering, hoodies, baseball bats, and any other weaponry.
Cadagon St, Marrickville (2 minutes from Sydenham Station)
1pm

One Day Sundays
What parties do you know of with a spit roast, live graffiti artists, a basketball court, a dance floor, cheap drinks AND a whole days line up of incredible DJs??  Not many.. but the One Day crew, the party animals that they are, hold one every month on the last Sunday and it's grown into an event of epic proportions. Come early for a beer in the sun and watch the artists work, or come late to get sweaty on the dance floor.  Either way you're in for a good day. This month's guest is the first international guest spot P.Money (NZ)

Speech Therapy
I was finally able to get out to this last time and for sure it is one of the very best regular hip hop events going at the moment! It really celebrates and shows off the emcee but in a totally different context than usual. In this form the emcee drops a cappella verses, poetry, stories, or anything they see fit. You can get to know your favourite emcees in an intimate setting.  And this is one that I would HIGHLY recommend. It's almost worth skipping work again.  This month featuring: Joe New, Dialect (Dialect and Despair), and Muph
This one shocked me because I love all these legends! The line ups just keep getting better and better!
