At the Club

So last night was a good reminder for me that not only do I hate going to the club but I'm probably never going to meet someone with my interests going to the club anyway because one of the things that I really hate is people that go to the club.
Don't get me wrong I love drinking, but dancing, eh, not so much. I'm a white girl so my dancing consists of maybe throwing a hand in the air and shuffling my feet a little. Not a good look for anyone. If I'm drunk enough and I actually LIKE the music that's a different story. But really, the worst thing about going to the club is the music. That and the fact that you can't even make simple comment to someone without screaming directly into their ear hole and then that doesn't even work because they just shrug their shoulders at you anyway. Oh and don't even get me started on the guys that think it's ok to just run up and grab random girls asses on the dance floor. Fuck off dude, it is not cool with me for you to touch me, I don't even fucking know you.

But in all seriousness, have you ever actually heard a good song at the club that was made after 1995? No. Because besides classic songs all the music that they play is fucking crap. I mean, I seriously haven't even heard of any of these songs. Am I crazy? Do I really have that obscure of musical tastes? I have asked 3 DJs at different clubs in the last few weeks if they can play any Aussie hip hop and I have gotten a non-response. Oh wait, one guy played Nosebleed Section, fair enough. I mean, okay fine I don't really expect you to have Thundamentals. But 360? Bliss n Eso? Maybe the new Hilltop Hoods? These artists have some fairly mainstream songs don't they?
Oh so your knowledge of hip hop consists of Snoop Dogg, Notorious B.I.G., Beastie Boys, and maybe maybe if we're lucky some A Tribe Called Quest? No wait even that last one is pretty rare to hear. Cool bro. Wait so you didn't even realise that there is Australian hip hop? Oh ok, I'm a DJ but I don't even know about different genres of music, I just play the same crap that everyone else plays and then maybe throw in Micheal Jackson or something. DANCE PARTY it up!!

Life disappoints the shit out of me sometimes.

Anyway, lesson learned. No more clubs for me. Pubs only because at least someone throws some Cold Chisel on the jukebox every once and a while and I can actually hold a conversation without losing my voice. And if I'm going to dance it's going to be at a hip hop show, and that's mostly just jumping anyway so it's all good.

End rant. It's time to talk about things that I do like.

Cathy

By the way this is my best friend....

She's out on the Great Barrier Reef there.  She loves diving, travelling, speaking Spanish, oh and of course hip hop music.  She's a big part of the reason that I moved to Sydney so I could be close to her again.  She lives in CAN-BRAAAH at the moment though but hopefully that will change soon....
Cathy is the one that I go to most of my concerts and festivals with.  Also she will have long discussions with me about Australian hip hop music, artists, and things we saw on twitter without getting lost or frustrated like most other people.  Sometimes I think me and Cathy are the same person.  We bought the same thongs twice, we tend to wear the same clothes on the same day and one time we even rented and watched the same movie at the exact same time while in two different states.  And of course, we tend to like the same music.  I usually find out out and tell her what music she should start listening to so that she can become as obsessed as I am.  I mean, she listened to some good music before I came along, don't get me wrong but her favourite artist was Kanye West when I met her, so she had a loooooong way to go from there.

This is us back in those days...
(You can see it in my face   I'm like  Kanye? Cathy, how could you? that shit cray!)

And this is us now..
I don't even know what that means, no one knows what it means. And, yes, of course she still listens to Kanye. I mean, who doesn't?

Favourite artists at the moment include (but are not limited to of course): Bliss n Eso, Grieves, Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate, Illy, Hilltop Hoods, The Herd, The Thundamentals (recently), Atmosphere (a favourite of mine, still trying to get Cathy hooked but it will happen before the upcoming concert so I'm not worried), OutKast and A Tribe Called Quest are still getting top plays from me.

Oh yeah and also important....
we like beers...

I love her!!!

The end. (or is it?)

stuck in twitter mode.

My main reason for doing this is that lately I find myself stuck in a loop that I think a lot of us are stuck in at the moment. Check facebook, check twitter, update, check in, retweet, copy & paste link, upload photo, hashtag, and repeat... again and again throughout the day. Thing is I actually enjoy this kind of social interaction. I think our generation has come to accept it as a valid form of communication, the quickest one there is, and it's hard to keep our attention for very long. Twitter, my preferred social media network has a 140 character limit. Sure, it forces us to be concise which can be a good thing, but I think the writer inside me also misses having the opportunity to be verbose. My first delve into online social networking was in the form of online diaries, which today could be considered basically the anti-twitter. So in the spirit of finding balance in all things, I'm going to kick it old school for a while, if you will, and write some full length articles. I will mainly focus on the Australian hip hop music scene: my experiences at concerts & festivals, my opinion on albums, songs, and videos, my interactions with people, and any other news or tidbits I'd like to share along the way. Hoping I can keep this twitter generation interested past the first line, don't worry there will be pictures too, so in case you get daunted by the thought of reading all those words, you can take a break and just stare at the pretty colours for a while...

On a side note I find it interesting that spell check recognises twitter as a valid word but not facebook..

Onward and upward people!
